Job Description

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Professor in Accounting in the Department of Accounting under the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance. Professor in Accounting is responsible for making original contributions to the discipline, research and scholarship. The incumbent plays a critical role in providing leadership in scholarship and research internationally and makes significant contribution in the governance of the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • i Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Accounting and related areas. The Department reserves the right to allocate other courses in addition to those outlined;
  • ii. Supervise post graduate and undergraduate student’s projects as need may arise;
  • iii. Participate in the academic, governance and social engagement in Accounting and related disciplines;
  • iv. Contribute to the development of and implement university, faculty and school level strategies, policies, plans, and procedures;
  • vi. Guide and support students in the adoption of a broad range of learning practices appropriate to the discipline;
  • vii. Support and guide students into understanding how knowledge is constructed in the discipline of innovation and thoughtful ways at undergraduate and post-graduate levels;
  • viii. Provide Exemplary evidence of inquiry-based teaching and learning across a range of levels;
  • ix. Demonstrate coherence between philosophy and practice;
  • x. Review programmes/ courses to ensure they are relevant to and up to date with local, international, global and disciplinary contexts, as well as engagement with students, stakeholders and peers;
  • xi. Ensure alignment between programmes/ courses and respective outcomes, teaching and learning activities, and assessment methods and criteria;
  • xii. Analyze assessment processes and student assessment results to inform curriculum practice;
  • xiii. Lead original research projects, addressing key questions in the discipline;
  • xiv. Secure external funding to support research and elevate the university’s reputation;
  • xv. Drive grant proposal development to sustain research momentum;
  • xvi. Conduct and publish high level, transdisciplinary research in field of expertise;
  • xvii. Shape future research agendas within the discipline and broader society;
  • xviii. Collaborate with colleagues in other universities and research institutions in impactful research;
  • xix. Contribute to the development of intellectual property that benefits the university;
  • xx. Demonstrate excellent leadership in policy formulation and Research Institute management within the university;
  • xxi. Provide effective leadership in change management across the entire university;
  • xxii. Contribute to curriculum development and governmental advisory groups;
  • xxiii. Develop entrepreneurial and economic initiatives benefiting the community;
  • xxiv. Enhance the university’s reputation through leadership and participation in national and international initiative;
  • xxv. Make high level impact in institutional and national policy review;
  • xxvi. Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks;
  • xxvii. Comply with relevant regulations and legislation and perform any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of School/Departmental Chairperson

Qualifications & Experience

  • (i) a PhD/Doctorate in Accounting or related areas ;
  • (ii) a Master’s degree in Accounting or related areas ;
  • (iii) a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related areas ;
  • (iv) at least nine (9) years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution;
  • (v) a minimum of twenty-four (24) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers.
  • Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases.
  • The remaining twelve (12) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers;
  • (vi) An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher;
  • (vii) sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years;
  • (viii) Sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned);
  • (ix) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years;
  • (x) lead and/or single author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications.
  • There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students;
  • (xi) publications should be spread internationally and across journals;
  • (xii) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 3 of the these);
  • (xiii) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer review of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international/symposia (required in at least 3 of the these);
  • (xiv) evidence of governance and social engagement;
  • (xv) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations;
  • (xvi) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University and
  • (xvii) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD these internationally .
  • Added advantage : Demonstration of staff leadership through induction, mentoring, team building, performance as Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, Director of Academic Centre, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor.
  • Other Requirements: Registered/or be eligible to register with BQA as an Assessor/Moderator.
