Job Description
The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Technician in Microbiology in the Department of Biological Sciences , under the School of Physical and Life Science. The Technician in Microbiology is responsible for preparing equipment and materials for laboratories/ workshops/studios and providing teaching support as required for all teaching and learning environments. The position holder will ensure that the equipment and materials within the premises are in good order and maintains an inventory for stocks and equipment from assigned laboratories/ workshops/studios.
Key Responsibilities
- contribute to the development of and implement the unit strategy, policies, and procedures
- prepare, demonstrate and monitor equipment and materials for laboratory practicals, field work, teaching and research
- assist the lecturer with assessment/grading of student reports for laboratory/field work/tutorials
- provide timely technical support for various internal and external projects and activities
- maintain an accurate record of all technical services and support provided to enable teaching, research and engagement
- operate and perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure equipment functionality
- identify and report observed faults within the laboratory
- assist in inventory management by monitoring supplies and assisting with procurement tasks
- identify and report the need for decommissioning obsolete equipment and recommended their replacement
- participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks
- participate in internal and external audits in line with University policies
- respond to customer/stakeholder queries and inquiries related to area of expertise
- adhere to performance targets as reflected in the performance review and appraisal
- identify learning opportunities and follow up on own training and development in line with departmental needs
- undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor in line with their role
Qualifications & Experience
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field
- Some experience as a technician in the area of Microbiology is preferred
- Some experience in a technical or laboratory environment is preferred
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot various educational technologies and equipment
- Ensure accuracy in preparation of materials and grading
- Basic understanding of technical equipment and maintenance procedures
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn and develop technical skills
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a desire to work in a team oriented environment
